StorageTekT 9840 tape drive

StorageTekT 9840 tape drive

The StorageTekT 9840 "access-centric" tape drive offers superior speed and unmatched data access, along with excellent capacity, for transaction-intensive, time critical applications. With its unrestricted connectivityTopen systems to mainframe, Ultra SCSI, ESCON and native Fibre Channel (ideal for SAN attachment) the 9840 is engineered for fast-paced businesses that need to maintain continuous and economical on-demand access to a wide range of data.

  • Reduce the time needed to perform NearlineT searches, inquiries and restores; mid-point load, a mere 8 second average search time, and a native data-rate of 10 megabytes per second combine to provide rapid answers to data searches.
  • Back-up more data in less time. Each cartridge stores 20 gigabyte native capacity and 40 to 80 gigabytes or more with data compression (a standard feature) for fewer loads and unloads, making the 9840 an ideal back-up device.
  • With automation and AMT (Adaptive Media Technology) you can combine 9840 with virtual and capacity tape offerings to precisely address your customers' needs with your own business objectives.

Tape Matrix

A 9840 access-centric tape drive allows you to store and share information reliably and quickly. Because the 9840 works seamlessly with most StorageTek tape libraries, you can enhance the value of your investment in automation while managing the conundrum of today's business - managing massive and growing amounts of data while keeping it accessible to all...without breaking the bank.

Specifications

Performance Data
Tape Speed
   Read/Write 79 IPS (2 m/s)
   Search/Rewind 315 IPS (greater than 8 m/s)
Tape Load and Initialize to Ready 4 s
Search Time 8 s (average 1st search)
11 s (average subsequent searches)
Maximum Rewind Time 16 s
Interfaces (per Drive) 1 ESCON, 1 Ultra-SCSI or
2 Fibre Channel (SC optical)
Compression Enhanced LZ-1, 4:1 Ratio

Individual compression achieved is a function of many variables, including the data characteristics. For example, scientific data usually compresses less than general business data. As a practical guide, mainframe (MVS/ESCON) compression rates are typically 4:1, while client server operating systems (UNIX/NT on SCSI or Fibre) usually achieve in the 2:1 to 2.5:1 range. In all instances, slightly lower or significantly higher numbers may be achieved.
