This tape drive is an external, stand-alone streaming tape drive which, depending on the model, can store up to 60GB of un-compressed data. It provides a media capacity of 20GB (40GB with 2:1 compression) data storage per cartridge and a sustained data rate of 3.0 MB/sec (6.0MB/sec with 2:1 compression). The IBM 7208 model 342 features data compression hardware using an adaptation of IBM's improved data recording capability (IDRC) algorithm. It delivers a media capacity of 60 GB (150 GB with 2.5:1 compression*) data storage per cartridge and a sustained data transfer rate of 12 MB/sec. (30 MB/sec. with 2.5:1 compression*). This is 3X the capacity and 4X the data transfer rate of its predecessor, the IBM 7208 model 341.
