Overview
The IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape System 3590
consists of a family of powerful integrated storage solutions that
combine high capacity, performance, and reliability for stand-alone
and automated enterprise-attached systems. With native FIbre CONnection
(FICON) attachment, the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Controller
3590 Model A60 can provide even greater improvements in tape performance
and attachment distance when compared with Enterprise System CONnection
(ESCON).
3590 Tape System
The 3590 Model A60 Controller, with up to four
times the performance of the Model A50, is designed for leading-edge,
high- performance ESCON and FICON attachment of the IBM TotalStorage
Enterprise Tape Drive 3590 to S/390 enterprise servers and zSeries
900 servers. Using IBM Seascape® architecture to combine widely
accepted IBM components RS/6000® base, AIX® operating system, PowerPC®
604E microprocessors, and PCI bus architecture the Model A60 is
designed for high performance and enables resource sharing to help
reduce hardware and infrastructure costs.
The 3590 A60 Controller attaches to 3590 Model B or Model E Tape
Drives via a standard Ultra SCSI interface. The 3590 A60 Controller
offers a Fibre Channel feature for attaching 3590 Model E Tape Drives
with the Fibre Channel interface using the IBM 2109 S16 SAN Fibre
Channel Switch. The 3590 Model E Tape Drive provides an uncompressed
data rate of up to 14 MB/sec, approximately 55 percent faster than
the 3590 Model B.
The 3590 is designed to reduce job processing time, as well as cartridge
and equipment requirements all at an affordable price for Data Facility
Hierarchical Storage Manager (DFSMShsmT), master file processing,
volume dumps, image storage, and other uses.
Solution flexibility
3590 Tape Drives are the foundation of a variety
of storage solutions from stand-alone (3590 A14 or standard racks)
to automated (IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Automated Tape Library
3494, including the IBM TotalStorage Virtual Tape Server) solutions.
As a reusable storage asset, 3590 Tape Drives and the Model A60
Controller can also operate with StorageTek Automated Cartridge
Systems (ACS), helping to extend the 3590 investment even further.
Increased cartridge capacity
The 3590 High Performance Tape Cartridge has a
native capacity of 10 GB on Model B and 20 GB on Model E Tape Drives.
The Lempel-Ziv data compression technique provides capacity up to
30 GB on Model B and 60 GB on Model E Tape Drives. The 3590 Extended
High Performance Tape Cartridge has a native capacity of 20 GB on
Model B and 40 GB on Model E Tape Drives. The LZ1 data compression
technique provides capacity of up to 60 GB on Model B and 120 GB
on Model E Tape Drives.
New 3590 A60 hardware enhancements can help improve application
performance and capacity utilization. Now, applications operating
in 3490 E emulation mode that write small blocks can exploit the
capacity of the 3590 Model E and extended length cartridge. This
capacity enhancement can also be exploited by DFSMShsm.
The high capacity of the media can result in fewer tape mounts and
fewer cartridges required to store a given amount of data. This
translates into less floor space required for cartridge storage.
ESCON and FICON channel attachments
The 3590 A60 Controller includes one to four dual-ported
ESCON channel attachment features, providing attachment to as many
as eight ESCON channels. Now, with native FICON support, up to two
FICON long wavelength or short wavelength attachment features are
supported on the A60 Controller, providing attachment to one or
two FICON channels. The FICON maximum channel link speed of 100
MB/sec full duplex (versus 17 MB/sec simplex for ESCON) helps enhance
tape drive performance. Both ESCON and FICON attachments are supported
on the Model A60, enabling 3590 Tape Drives to be shared between
ESCON and FICON servers. Each ESCON or FICON channel can support
up to 64 logical channels, with multiple logical paths per MVS®
image.
The 3590 A60 now supports high-speed location to relative file position.
This capability can significantly improve read performance for file-stacking
applications that access by file number rather than block ID. The
A60 also offers significantly improved write performance for applications
that stack multiple small files on a tape. The performance gain
is achieved through the elimination of costly redundant, rewritten
tape marks, and the associated backhitch. These new performance
capabilities of the hardware can be exploited by OS/390(R) and z/OS®
and are designed to be transparent to the user application.
Cost effectiveness
The IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape System 3590's
large capacity and high performance means that significantly fewer
resources such as hardware, tape cartridges, floor space, shelf
space, and automation slots are required. The high performance of
FICON enables multiple ESCON channels to be replaced with a single
FICON channel. The resulting reduced infrastructure of fewer channels,
director ports, and channel addresses on the server can help lower
storage costs.
Investment protection
To help provide investment protection, existing
3590 Model B11 and B1A Tape Drives can be field-upgraded for a charge
to the new E models. Media investment is also preserved, because
the new Model E Tape Drives can read and reuse existing cartridges.
FICON is an option on new and currently installed 3590 A60 Controllers.
An A60 with FICON is supported with 3590 Model B or E Tape Drives,
as well as in current tape libraries and frames further preserving
existing investments in tape hardware.
3590 Tape Drives
The 3590 Model B11 and E11 are frame- or rack-mounted
and incorporate a 10-cartridge Automated Cartridge Facility (ACF)
for high-capacity (up to 1.2 TB for Model E11s) unattended operation.
The 3590 B1A and E1A are designed to be used in a IBM TotalStorage
Enterprise Automated Tape Library 3494, IBM TotalStorage Virtual
Tape Server, and IBM TotalStorage Silo Compatible Tape Drive Frame.
Ease of use
With the 3590 B11 or E11, cartridges are loaded
into and unloaded from the ACF in a convenient, portable 10-cartridge
magazine. The ACF has multiple modes of operation accumulate, automatic,
manual, and system all of which can be selected from the operator
display. 3590 Tape Drives feature an operator/service display showing
device status, activities, error conditions, and messages.
Configurations
The 3590 A60 Controller is
part of the following solutions.
- Non-library usage: Up to four 3590 Model B11 or E11
Tape Drives along with one 3590 Model A60 Controller can
be installed in a 3590 A14 frame.

Controllers can be installed in a 3590 C10 frame. Each
controller can attach to a 3590 C12 frame, which contains
up to four 3590 Model B1A or E1A Tape Drives.
|
Adjacent frame and multiframe support
The adjacent frame support features on the Enterprise
Tape Library 3494 enable 3590 Tape Drives residing in a 3494 D12,
L12, or L14 frame to attach to a 3590 A60 in an adjacent 3494 D14
frame. Up to 10 3590 Tape Drives can attach to a single 3590 A60
in a 3494 solution.
Multiframe options are available for the 3590 Model A60 in stand-
alone rack, frame, and Silo Compatible Frame solutions. This support
enables a single A60 to attach to up to eight SCSI- attached 3590
drives or up to twelve Fibre Channel-attached drives. These expanded
attachment options for the 3590 Model A60 make it very cost-effective
compared to other tape solutions.
